Jack Cudjo was a royal from Ghana (Gold Coast) sold into slavery and ended up in Newark, New Jersey. During the Revolutionary War, he substituted for his master Benjamin Coe. He fought gallantly in almost all the major wars that at the end of it all, he was given his freedom and an acre of land in downtown Newark. He eventually became the first documented black businessman in Newark, New Jersey.
